AI Supports Curious Entrepreneurs in Southeast AB with $1.17 Mil in Funding

SOUTHEAST ALBERTA, May 11, 2022 – Alberta Innovates knows that innovation can happen anywhere. As part of our pan-Alberta innovation strategy, regional investment is being made across Alberta. In Medicine Hat, Alberta Innovates is investing $1.17 million over the next three years, for a total of nearly $20 million across multiple communities in the province.

In Medicine Hat, we have seen how a curious mind and relentless energy can change the way we approach problems here in Alberta. Kinetisense is one example of this. Kinetisense uses cameras to capture a patient’s range of motion in about 30 seconds, giving practitioners objective data to assess and treat their patients. The data they collect gets stored in their Vicon vault, which has become one of the largest biodata vaults on the planet.

As Kinetisense continues to grow—they now have clients in over 12 countries—they are expanding their technology beyond personal trainers and kinesiology-based practitioners. They now analyze concussion patients for repeat injuries and predict falls in geriatric patients and use robotics with their software in rural areas to connect patients to specialized practitioners, enabling better healthcare access for everyone.

“Kinetisense prides itself on being a Medicine Hat-based company and a world leader in clinical human motion capture. At every stage, funding from the Regional Innovation Network of Southern Alberta (APEX) has been paramount in enabling our growth and overall success.  This recent funding will not only promote technological growth in Alberta but will help companies like Kinetisense scale their offerings to a wider market.” ~Dr. Ryan D. Comeau  BSc, DC, ACC, Co-Founder & CEO of Kinetisense Inc.

“The companies we work with are problem solvers. They are creating innovative solutions but may not always realize that there is a market for their concepts. This funding will allow us to help more local entrepreneurs to put those ideas into action and get to market quicker. Plus, we want companies to know they don’t have to do it on their own. We have a team of partners who help entrepreneurs to start and grow their tech and unique businesses, right here from SE Alberta. We are grateful for this ongoing funding from Alberta Innovates to continue to help local tech and knowledge-based businesses. And with specific funding earmarked for Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), we are excited to extend our reach and help companies from across Alberta in this high-growth tech sector.” ~Tracy Stroud, Regional Innovation Network (RIN) Manager – SE Alberta

“Through the Regional Innovation Networks, Alberta Innovates has brought together the power of a network of strong regional supports across the province to create opportunities for SMEs, entrepreneurs and innovators to be successful.” ~Laura Kilcrease, CEO, Alberta Innovates
