Octal7 Inc.
Benjamin Weir opened Octal7 Inc. in 2018 to offer a variety of technical services in Southern Alberta, from drone, photo and video operations, to technical illustrations, drafting, 3D modelling, conceptual rendering and map creation.
“It’s a unique span of technical services, where they all relate to one another, and has allowed me the opportunity to provide videography work for the Medicine Hat Tigers, SHAW Television and the City of Medicine Hat council meetings,” says Weir.
While he runs his company, Weir teaches at the Medicine Hat College part-time in the Built Environment Engineering Technology (CADD BEET) program.
He was born and raised in Southeast Alberta and graduated from Medicine Hat College with his Computer Aided Drafting and Design and Technical Illustrator, where he learned design, drafting and 3D graphics. Additionally, Weir has an educational background in Mechatronics and Industrial Automation from SAIT.
“Medicine Hat is unlike any other city. It offers a unique small-town advantage that brings a better quality of life than any bigger city. If you want to quickly run an errand during the day, you can,” he says. “Geographically, this city has much more to offer, such as, taking day trips to the mountains, exploring the river valley, and visiting Red Rock Coulee and other nearby destinations.”
Weir has been able to create a successful tech company in Medicine Hat and has received support from APEX Alberta and Alberta Innovates. He continues to seek new and exciting projects; he constantly looks for collaborative opportunities that support local businesses in the city.
His most recent collaboration was with the Sunshine Skillet, an event hosted by Tourism Medicine Hat that supports local chefs, fresh produce businesses and the Root Cellar (previously known as the Medicine Hat Food Bank).
“Octal7 Inc. is an excellent chance for me to connect all the dots in a community while offering a variety of services locally. I enjoy the local aspect and capturing the local perspective,” says Weir.
Other services that Weir offers are, topographical modeling, software development, database solutions, internet of things and customized technical consulting and training.
